The Forks

The Forks Mercantile

17685 US-287, Livermore, CO 80536

The Shop: A great stop for an Espresso on the porch. Also famous for lunch and dinner, this former hotel was established in 1875. I'm not sure if they were ordering lattes back then, but today you can certainly enjoy your beverage on the expansive porch.

The Route: At 2 hours and 75 miles, this is one of my go-to routes if I want a mix of open highway and backroads. While this route includes a section of dirt roads, it is mostly smooth and can be navigated with a road bike. From The Forks, take Red Feather Lakes Road (74E) west toward the village. This is a beautiful slowly winding road up and over gentle rolling hills. For the dirt road section, turn left on Manhattan Road. Clearly, this is not New York City. Watch carefully for County Road 69 where you will turn right. There is a steep section here.

When you reach Highway 14, turn left. This beautifully paved road follows the Cache La Poudre River for 31 miles where it joins Highway 287. Along the way, check out the hippie stop of Mishawaka (The Mish). Turn left on Highway 287 to make your way back to The Forks, or turn right to reach Fort Collins.
